Brisbane Mixtapes!

It's been a while since we have done some quality Brisbane artists, so today we thought sharing some mix tapes was a good idea!

CHARLIE HUSTLE

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Charlie Hustle has been collecting vinyl for about 5 years. His first taste of club djing was playing in a group called Triple Trouble with two friends Sampology and Clayton at the Empire's Moon Bar. To this day he still plays vinyl, either from his collection, or through Serato. He enjoys and plays a variety of different genres, and may be described as unpredictable at the best of times!

His musical style can not be easily described. He believes that djing should strike a balance between keeping the crowd happy, while staying true to himself.

There are two types of music - good and bad, and Charlie Hustle plays good music, whether it be new, old or in between. His quick mixing of hip hop, funk, soul, disco, house, baltimore, break beat, drum & bass, dubstep, reggae and rock ensures he and the crowd are always getting busy.

Charlie Hustle has already played at most major clubs in Brisbane, supporting the likes of The Beatnuts, J-Live, Cash Money (world DMC champ), Dj Kentaro (world DMC champ), Kool Keith/Dr.Octagon, Slyde, Luke Vibert, Caspa, Silent Witness & Squire, Black Sun Empire, Recloose, Linus Loves, Maurice Fulton, Dexter (The Avalanches), Funktrust, Hump Day Project, Ajax (Bang Gang), Sampology, Steve Lind, Jeff Drake, PTY LTD, King Farook, Nina Las Vegas (Hoops), The Vinyl Slingers, Dope and Dusted, The Staford Brothers, The winnie Coopers, The Optimen, 2 Dogs, and Tom Thum/Tommy Illfiger, among others. Charlie Hustle has also played regularly at parties from Elektric Kiss, Shifty (Dump/Feat.) and Boxylucha.

Charlie Hustle has a love for music and ensures that he surrounds himself with it on a daily basis. Whether he's working at the record store (Butter Beats), searching for new music, playing in clubs, going to shows or playing with beats in his bedroom, his passion for what he does is obvious.

Just because he looks 16 doesn't mean he can't keep up with the big boys! Expect the unexpected with Charlie Hustle, and not just in relation to his djing!

DRONE TREE

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Within the barren landscape of generic, cliche Australian urban music, The Drone Tree has grown from a rare patch of creative soil.

A startling unconventional union of two DJ's (Vita, Juicy) along with MC's Knovell Capote and Grannt Burrge; The Drone Tree has its roots firmly planted in hip-hop culture. Casting aside the commercial sensibilities of more traditional hip-hop outfits, the group functions as an eclectic mix of inspired artists, working together to bring colour to a blank musical canvas.

As nationally renowned DJ's, Vita and Juicy understand that the fundamentals of their art is simple; to move the listener, both physically and emotionally. With this in mind, The Drone Tree have dedicated themselves to creating substance based records that connect deeply with their audience, yet are accessible enough to keep the dance floor pumping. With years of experience, Vita and Juicy have toured alongside and learned from the best, including Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Rhianna, Ice Cube and Lil Jon. Individually, their mixtape series have earned them a loyal following, and cemented their reputation as industry trend-setters.

On the other side of the equation, MC's Burrge and Capote have established themselves from within the underground hip-hop circuit. The last few years have seen the boys prove themselves lyrically alongside industry veterans such as Scribe, Talib Kweli, Sway and Bliss N Eso. Passing the mic back and forth, the two MC's have developed a harmonious, complementary style; Capote's authoritative, baritone provides the narrative Burrge's vivid imagery.

Currently putting the finishing touches on their debut mixtape, The Drone Tree are gearing up for a busy summer, with album recording sessions sandwich between a seemingly endless touring schedule. The group takes it all in stride, because once the seeds are sewed, The Drone Tree will grow.

If your truly into a good beat, this is for you.

A Duo that have well and truly exceeded my expectations as Producers & Rappers. When i was younger i listened to a lot of their older albums that i really liked, and here i am sharing my favourite Album, titled "Moment Of Truth".

Gangstarr's Bio

The group was founded in 1986 by Guru (then known as Keithy E. The Guru) and DJ 1,2 B-Down (also known as Mike Dee) with various producers, such as Donald D, J.V. Johnson or DJ Mark the 45 King helping out. In 1987 and 1988, Gang Starr released three 12" vinyl singles on the Wild Pitch label.

In 1989, the group split and the only member willing to continue under the name Gang Starr was Guru. He soon got in touch with DJ Premier (then known as Waxmaster C) who sent him a beat tape which Guru liked. He invited DJ Premier to join Gang Starr and in that same year they released their first single "Words I Manifest" along with the album "No More Mr. Nice Guy" (1989).

During their career Gang Starr helped pioneer the New York hip hop sound. The entirety of Gang Starr's catalog, especially Step in the Arena (1991), Daily Operation (1992) "Hard to Earn" (1994) and Moment of Truth (1998) are well-respected among critics. Their track "Jazz Thing", featured on the soundtrack to Spike Lee's film Mo' Better Blues, helped establish the sound of jazz rap.

Both members of Gang Starr have deep roots in the New York hip hop scene, despite hailing from Boston, Massachusetts (Guru) and Houston, Texas (DJ Premier), and have each worked with countless artists.

The Gang Starr Foundation was a loose collective of various people who have worked closely with the group, through either Guru's now defunct Ill Kid label, DJ Premier's production work or the management company that Gang Starr was represented by, Empire Management. The founding member was Vikar.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS - WEATHER!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Finally as the week is nearing the end and the start of Splendour is close to the beginning, the only thing that could hold party goers back is the weather. I'll give you what was written on www.inthemix.com.au.

With New South Wales and Queensland currently experiencing an early surge of spring weather, will 2009 be the sunniest Splendour In The Grass yet? Well, we wouldn’t bet our (gum)boots on it.

ITM’s spies already on the ground at Belongil Fields have reported the conditions are dry and temperate, but there’s some rain on the way. According to the forecast by Elders Weather, late showers are expected in Byron Bay on Friday. Saturday will see a possible shower, with a little rain (less than 1mm) on the horizon for Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to be between 12°C and 20°C over the weekend. So, while it’s far from a washout, we advise you pack a poncho. We’ll keep you updated if the forecast takes a drastic turn for the summery.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS - BLOC PARTY!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As you all know this weekend thousands of people will be making their way to Byron Bay to party at one of Australia's most well known festivals, SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS. Because we are so pumped about the weekend, for this week we are going to be featuring some of our favorite artist on the blog, performing this weekend.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

BLOC PARTY - These guys are sure to blow your mind, if you caught them in Brisbane earlier in the year you would definitely know what i'm talking about! Known for their hyper-kinetic live shows, their performance at Splendour 2007 still goes down as one of the best sets by any band in the event’s history – and that’s saying something! When BLOC PARTY released their debut album Silent Alarm back in 2005, they released a second album just a few months later with remixed versions of all the original tracks. They've just announced they'll do the same thing with album number three, Intimacy. Intimacy Remixed will be released May 11 on CD and a triple 12" vinyl pack and will include remixes by Gold Panda, Mogwai and Filthy Dukes and will lead off with a remix of Signs by Armand Van Helden. They’ll blow your mind at SPLENDOUR 09! Make sure you don's miss these guys on Saturday at 10.30pm at the Supertop Stage!!!

DISCO WINNER!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Thanks to everyone who entered into the Disco Disco comp and congratulations to Pat Fitzgerald for winning this weeks double pass to Monastery, to check out Beni from Riot In Belgium and a whole lot more at Disco Disco's School Dance Party!

Below is Mr Fitzgerald's answer to " tell us if you could have a riot with 'BENI'(from riot in belgium) where would it be?"

Dear beloved Free Form Events,

I am writing to you in interest for Free tickets to see one of my favourite and newly entrepreneuring artists Beni Single. I have been an avid fan of his work since they busted onto the dance scene in 2006 with one of my favourite tracks "The Acid Never Lies". I am very keen to see Beni's new tunes in alliance with the acclaimed French Record Company Kitsune tmr night at Monastery My Love See's You.

If I were granted the opportunity to run riot with Beni himself I'd have to choose Paris'. There are no crazier than the French. Post world war two attacks layed on by Germans ending in catastrophich attacks against the french would help fuel one of the largest hate riots seen to man. As his new song inspires French Electro I think with the thick electric bassline blasting in to the atmosphere would help us wreak havoc with those nasty Moustache wearing frog eating freaks.

Much Love Pat

STAY TUNED FOR MORE TIX! And if you get the chance drop by Monastery tomorrow night to check out Disco Disco's fourth night, it's sure to be a wild one..

BOOOTLEGS!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I've got some really cool bootlegs sent in from Luki, a Monastery resident. Don't forget to catch his sets when you get a chance.I'll leave you with his bio and the tracks. ENJOY!

BIO

The United Kingdom has created many dance sensations and it appears as if Luke Ellis, aka Luki, is destined to follow in the same path – albeit from twenty thousand kilometres away in Brisbane, Australia. Back as a young lad in ’92, Luki migrated across the Indian Ocean and to the sunshine state in Queensland, where today he’s widely considered as one of the more prominent dance artists of the present times. Seriously, rattle off his stage-name to anybody in the always-busy clubbers-paradise known as Fortitude Valley and you’ll instantly understand what we mean. Why you ask? Because since the young age of 20-years-old, Luki has prospered behind the decks, and consequently, has the lengthy list of achievements to show for it. Now 24, he’s previously held down residencies at the trendy GPO and at the moment, controls the hard party-loving dance floor at Monastery from Dirty Thursday’s right through to the more mainstream evening of Saturday night. Let us not forget about Sydney either, where Luki once regularly played to large crowds at prestigious nightspots such as Moulin Rouge – the home of ’09 Clubber’s Guide Host Bass Kleph – alongside travelling up and down the state to various nightclubs in his much-loved adopted state of QLD. But behind the man who loves DJ’ing at nightclubs and the electrifying atmosphere that comes with it, is a guy who equally enjoys the hard work, respect and props that comes with bangin’ out a fresh original or remixed production in the studio. As such, since the age of 22 when Luki first developed his own personal studio, he has released three well-received remixes – one of which managed to reach the astounding position of 39 on DJ Download’s Top 100 with limited promotion. In addition, it’s under the guise of Frousse that Luki spends many of his ‘spare’ hours producing alongside close friend and fellow Monastery resident DJ Danny T. And as was always to be expected, his solo production success has extended onto the fortunes of the dynamic duo, with Frousse already having been lucky enough to see two of their collaboration remixes released. This brings us to now, with Luki set to hit the ground running in 2009 with his ambitious aspirations positioning himself well for what should be yet another musically rewarding year. At the forefront of these goals is the soon-to-be released ‘Luki EP’ which features four mind-blowing originals to be released in late February. And then there’s the honest pledge from Luki himself to remain busy, motivated and to create more remixes than ever before in ’09. Six years ago when this all began, music was just a hobby. Now, it’s an out-and-out lifestyle which he loves and wouldn’t trade for the world. But perhaps most importantly in today’s credit-crunch affected world where workers are seemingly losing their jobs willy-nilly, Luki’s love for the music will undoubtedly ensure that this is only the beginning of what will ultimately be considered a glamorous career timeline in the Australian dance industry.

1. Yeah - Usher (Luki's Ludacratic Remix)

2. Family Affair - Mary J Blige (Luki Remix)

3. Da Funk - Daft Punk (Luki Remix)

Hottest 100 of ALL TIME...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Triple J Hottest 100 of all time ended on sunday... It has so many great artists in it. I'm going to leave you with a review on Triple J's website about the winning song.

The song that revolutionised music. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ began life as a Pixies pastiche and grew to embody the impotent rage of a generation. A tidal wave of incendiary riffs and Kurt’s coruscating rasp, it catapulted Nevermind to the top of charts around the world before ultimately becoming a millstone around the singer’s neck, often dropped from sets or performed discordantly.

Bikini Kill singer Kathleen Hanna once spray-painted ‘Kurt smells like Teen Spirit’ on his wall following a conversation about anarchy and punk. Unbeknown to Cobain, she meant he reeked of then girlfriend Tobi Vail, who wore ‘Teen Spirit’ deodorant – a product aimed at American girls with sparkly teeth and purdy hair; not exactly Nirvana’s target audience…

With disquiet at their fame already gnawing at the band, they gave an interview on triple j that presenter Jen Oldershaw thought was so bad she almost deleted it. The band wound up their host, fired back monosyllabic answers, talked randomly about sex with Pavarotti and made armpit jokes while Kurt attacked a mic socket with scissors.

They offer up one prophetic insight. “Can you seeing yourself combusting in a couple of years?” Jen asked. “Um… Who cares?,” Kurt replies. He did, though: on April 8, ’94, the singer’s body was found. He’d taken a shotgun to his head. Rock ‘n roll history was changed, forever.

In the arms of a beautiful lady. Seriously, where are you spinning records these days? Well, I'm playing quite a lot around Europe right now. It's great 'cause the distance between cities is short. USA is different, it's crazy to fly from NYC to Cali in 6 hours or something to one gig and go back the next day with a crazy hangover. I'm glad to live in Europe. Berlin is good, great parties, late nites and all that. There are kids partying from Thursday till late Sunday without sleeping. Insane, I can't do that anymore...

What's the flavor of the month?

Good question, dude! Being able to be in Berlin and finish the record, thinking about titles and artwork, being creative about stuff like that... cruise my bike, since we had some beautiful spring days recently. This kind of stuff keeps my head free and positive. Hang with a nice lady! Make plans! Have fun!

What do you think of laptop DJs?

Gay stuff, not for me.

Would you call yourself old school?

Yes! Open minded old school! I'm ready for the music... I wanna hear more timeless sounds, there are too many short-lived things around. Some are already gone after one weekend, I dont like that... I don't wanna play music like this to the kids, they should know where it's coming from.

Which labels are you juggling with?

Well, right now my 12" "LOVE THE NITE AWAY" on Rong, DFA has just been released. And the reactions are pretty damn good! The "ITALIENS DO IT BETTER" Ep is also ready to go and will be released in June, under the name "MUCHO SWASH EP" (collab with dj partner Tiago/ resident at LUX club Lisboa). "REKIDS" will release another Kaos track called "HARD TO EARN" with an Killer "SHITROBOT dub mix", hopefully there will be promos in June! And the small but very stylish label Astrolab (home of Pilooski), just released " FLACO RYTHMO ". An unreleased mix I did for "CHK CHK CHK" !!! Yep, pretty busy ...the Lp will be out after the summer, but im still dealing with the labels. Lets see, everything looks pretty promising...

Tell me about writing music for the forthcoming album.

Well, I wrote the whole record in a place called Starnberg, that's near Munich. A beautiful place, nearby the Lake Starnberg. We worked in an old farmhouse. Then I moved all my shit back to Berlin to finish the recordings with Jochen Schmallbach ( producer of Tiefschwarz, M.A.N.D.Y etc ) He has mad skills when it comes to production, mixing and all that.

Taking Drugs?

Quit.

Talking Heads?

Every day.

Whats comin' up?

A beautiful LP.

If you would like any other information on KAOS head to DFA Records

As well as now exclusively being stocked at SUBFUSCO TCB Building Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley. Although they couldn't give me an exact dates, they told me their launch for the new trans-seasonal collection was coming up soon and to expect anything from this range.
