ICE CREAM MONDAY - CHRISTMAS TIME YO!

Ice Cream Monday

'Making Christmas a little more delicious, one year at a time'

Easing back into the lull week between the Christmas food marathon and New Years has been a cautious and fattening process.

Sliding from party to party I found myself with almost too many options to pick a feature for this weeks installment. So I didn’t.

Christmas lunch was a dessert marathon all to itself, the traditional ‘made to share’ strawberry freeze that was going around definitely got a lot of my attention, especially partnered up with some Pav and Brownies!!

I’ve gotta say, writing a blog about Ice Cream has definitely got its perks when it comes to Christmas time and I got one of the most bitchin’ presents of my life this year. A full Sundae Set!!

For anyone interested in stepping their entertaining arsenal up a notch, the Sundae set comes complete with a scoop, two ice cream themed bowls, choc fudge sauce, marshmallows AND sprinkles. I could’ve just said “the works” but that wouldn’t do it justice. Thankyou Ashley!!

To top that off and put it through its paces I also scored three awesome flavours from the valley’s infamous Shlix Ice Creamery (Courtesy of the very courteous, ms Emmy-Lou).

Lazy Lychee

Cheeky Cherry

& Ferrero Rocher.

Totally blitzing expectations here, the Lazy lychee had a distinctively and somewhat expected summer laziness to it, while the Cheeky Cherry definitely brought a candid counterpart to the subtle richness of the Ferrero.

I wouldn’t recommend going all three at once in the bowl, bit of a clash, but the cherry and Ferrero go pretty damn well together!

It’s hard to go wrong eating anything out of a bowl that looks like a massive ice cream cone, but this really was a showstopping event.

PEACE, LOVE AND DOUBLE-SCOOPS

Benny

ICE CREAM MONDAY - Episode #12 (Yew!)

ICE CREAM MONDAY

‘Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time’

Today – The Magnum ‘Ego’

!!ICE CREAM -- THE SOUNDTRACK!!

Lets just get this straight - Normally this sort of thing wouldn’t fly here.
Ice Cream Monday is not about to get stale and start running repeats this year and having been to Magnum town just last week, it did seem a little soon to be coming back. But there’s just something about the Ego…..

The beauty here is really in its simplicity.

Think back to a time when Drumstick ruled the Ice Cream world…. The Magnum was around, but it was just chillin’ out doing its ‘vanilla on a stick’ thing….
Then came Ego….

The part of the mind responsible for the mediation of the conscious and unconscious and developing a persons sense of personal identity.

Do you think streets have psychoanalysts on their product development team?

Guest reviewing this week, the surly old man in training and tortured artist, Mr. Tim Snartt.
If you haven’t already, now would be a good time to hit play on the NYPC.

Nothing like a good underscore for Ice Cream reviewing!

“The Ego really is… just awesome.
It’s a delicate symphony, each well-crafted part from the milk chocolate outer shell to the vanilla backbone playing a subtle yet integral role in the overall experience.

Almost prince like, eating an Ego takes you to a place where you feel like the King of Spain”…..
At this point I believe Tim lost his mind and began to drift further into oblivion, however the overall understanding amidst the crazed rambling was positive.

The Ego really is the bomb – an escape for the everyman, a piece of timeless indulgence, and a cornerstone of the late night selections.

Next week will be a bit of Christmas special, and not in the VH1 Top10 before Two10 kinda way.
As always, keep the suggestions for the Delizia Summer Special custom flavour coming in – check their website out at DELIZIA

And in the spirit of sharing – hit this one up as well –
WOKINABOX - WIN A YEARS WORTH OF ICE CREAM!

if you win the year’s supply I’m taxing you a month though!

MC Gaff E!

Here's something fun, wild and weird that is well worth looking at! Welcome to MC Gaff E.....!

Our story begins when MC Gaff E escaped the semi-rural wonderland of Brisbane Australia to seek her fortune in the big sleazy world in 2006. Landing in London she met Peter Kirk (The Outlaws), who suggested she become his spandex wearing rude MC. Inspired by this fun idea , MC Gaff E recorded her first five tracks with Thomas Bullock (of Rub n Tug) in his studio in the woods upstate New York in 2007. From there, she began rapping around Sydney, gradually expanding her gigs all around Australia then taking her show all around the world. Upon her travels, she met and collaborated with Brazil's Edu K, Sydney club king Kid Kenobi, Germany dance punk duo Digitalism and most recently, the legendary Horse Meat Disco transvestites, Jonny Woo and his crew of colourful freaks.

Performing all over the festival circuit non stop for the past 2 years, MC Gaff E and her DJ Drugmoney, have played major festivals including Glastonbury, Big Day Out, Bestival, The Big Chill and (Amsterdam's) Valtifest. Also playing renowned parties such as Broken Hearts Club in Berlin, underground disco jams run by Ed Banger's Mickey Moonlight and History Clock's Nathan Wilkins and Modular parties in both New York and London supporting KIM (The Presets), Lady Gaga and other rising stars.

So now is the time MC Gaff E and Drugmoney have returned to Australia from their most amazing European summer tour yet to release their spectacular debut album “Slug Being Sexy” produced by Thomas Bullock (aka Tommy Knockers). The album is a tour de force of punk disco electro rap and available NOW on itunes. So go for it and embrace the weird and wonderfulness of what is known as MC Gaff E and DJ Drugmoney's trannylicious technicolour psychedelic circus.

You can catch MC Gaff E and her colourful band of freaks in Sydney at the Ksubi/Picnic New Years Party at Gilligans, Field Day and the Big Day Out.

Ice Cream Monday - Featuring Tim Dart and Siran Uhrig

Making life a little more delicious - one week at a time...

Let me set the scene...

MAGNUM SANDWHICH - Poolside

Guest ice-cremologists, Tim Dart and Siran Uhrig joined me this fine evening as we took a stroll to Southbanks infamous beach.

Here we enjoyed the Magnum Sandwhich in the company of some strange, still water loving folk.

While being a fairly tasty little evening treat the Magnum failed impress the judges and left us pondering who it had really been designed for...

I'll leave the rest of the story up to the video.

Ice Cream Monday - MORE LIKE A PARTY THAN AN ICE CREAM!

Ice Cream Monday

‘Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time’

Firstly let me apologise for the lateness of this post – when you read the rest you’ll forgive me.

Priorities people. That’s all I’m saying.

Last week’s adventure to the Delizia factory at Virginia was nothing short of breathtaking.

Cass and I were met with a really cool reception over a Hazelnut Affogato and had a bit of a chat to John about what Delizia had freezing away in the back room, and there’s some really exciting stuff coming up for them; new packaging (can’t tell you what it looks like but its sexy as!).

What’s more – Ice Cream Monday are going to team up with their expert flavologists (I made that name up) to produce a little bit of limited edition history – the Ice Cream Monday Summer Special! Although its real name may change somewhere closer to when we know what it will actually be, all I can tell you now is – it’s going to blow your mind!

The suggestion box is open and true to ICM’s direction I want you to tell me what you think.

Ice Cream Monday is about sharing a little bit of that love – giving someone your last scoop, the chocolate bit in the bottom of your drumstick, or even just being the friend with sick ninja skillz to catch a falling scoop before its gets bitchumen sprinkles.

This week I’d like to introduce the lovely Emily Yeo to the blog, recently confirmed to be Chinese, Em has been undergoing quite the revelation of self and so I invited her to come and put her two 人民币 in.

This Monday began in a dark, air conditioned place, huddled in the living room wishing the memory of the night before would not die, but just leave us alone for a bit.... Stereosonic was epic, so was the afterparty, and so was the party after that... doing it sober had been quite the challenge (more on that here – www.hellosundaymorning.com) and I’ll admit, Monday was looking bleak.

UNTIL WE WENT TO WET N WILD!!!

Since the beginning of this blog I’ve been waiting for a day like this and in the wake of the flagship festival for party season, it was probably the best day ever! Despite the fact that hustling up the motivation to get down there was borderline superhuman.

Wet n Wild is still one of those places that inspires the 9year old kid inside you.
It’s got everything you could ever want, hot dogs, waterslides, ice cream, half naked girls, cheap souvenirs.... half naked girls.

So, whilst having a time out between kicking her ass on the super8 aqua racer and before we slinked away back to Calypso beach, we decided to take Summer by the balls and step it up a notch, WITH A GOLDEN FUCKING GAYTIME!

This Ice Cream was obviously invented for “break in case of party” type situations and in 30degree heat, sitting around the wave pool and being generally awesome, this was the time to bust it out.

Unfortunately the mobile Ice Cream cart we picked ours up from was a little bit on the blink and so ours were a little lacking on CRUNK CRUNCH honeycomb deal, but over all it’s still a radical ice cream.

I think Em described it as “not quite the ‘booyeah!’ kick in balls I was hoping for, but still delicious”

Sorry if I misquoted you Yeo. I’m pretty sure that’s what you said.

Monday was rad - Wet 'n' Wild is a magical place.

And back of into the middle distance I stare, dreaming of a place where Ice Cream flows from rivers high in the choc topped mountains... keep the suggestions for the SUMMER SPECIAL DELIZIA flavour coming.

ICE CREAM MONDAYS - Episode #9

Delizia in the house!

This week has been BY FAR one of my favourite weeks doing this blog. Things are happening, BIG, SUGARY, SWEET things; and as I continue, you know they’re getting sweeter (Bega, A little bit of Mambo, 1999).

Today ICM landed square in the centre of a veritable flavour goldmine. Delizia gelato desserts. The feature for the week – Tartufo.

Obviously packaged to incite a war among couple households or families with more than one kid, the Tartufo features 3 balls of chocolate gelato encasing a maraschino cherry, rolled in what I equate the protective power of Kevlar to complementation of flavour for Ice Cream; toasted almonds and cocoa! BOOM!

I was fortunate enough today to have a chat with one of the friendly family behind the Delizia powerhouse, Mr John Scimone, and got the inside scoop on a little bit of Delizia history to satisfy your taste buds.

“Delizia is a family company; my great grandfather was a gelato maker and my dad a pastry chef. We started out making cakes and biscuits, and after a long history of working closely with some of Brisbane’s finest chefs and post-dinner aficionados, we’ve now made the shift to gelato and ice cream only.”

The Tartufo is named after the Italian truffle, in fact, it IS the Italian word for truffle.
An expensive and equally delicious ingredient, the Tartufo is by far, one of the most amazing Ice Cream experiences I’ve had so far.

Served with a little bit of vanilla ice cream on the side it really pops as feature in your bowl, plus the added adventure of uncovering the cherry in the centre kinda gives you the feeling that you’ve gone somewhere, an archaeology of sorts.

John and I had a great chat about Delizia and there are some really cool things on the horizon for them, including the imminent release of a sexy new, custom designed 1litre package.
I even learnt that they employ full time staff in product development and new flavour design – rad! We’re going to pitch a Ice Cream Monday special to them tomorrow (don’t tell John... John if you’re reading this... please act surprised tomorrow)

After discovering that their factory was based only a stone throw away in Virginia, I had to ask that all important question that lies burning in the back of your mind from the day you turned 5. “Can I come and have a tour of your factory?” Which, I’m almost too excited to announce, was met with equal enthusiasm – AND ICM IS OFF TO MEET THE CREW TOMORROW AFTERNOON!

There is one golden ticket available to be my sidekick on this amazing journey – hit me on facebook to reserve your journey!

BEN HAMLEY (Facebook)

There are some amazing things in store for this week – for one, my personal trainer is probably going to murder me.... but... It’s gonna be worth it I think.

Until tomorrow, I leave you with some inspiration, GOLDEN TICKET

ICE CREAM MONDAY - EPISODE #8

'Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

The PIMPs Choice.

It’s been an eventful week for Ice Cream.

The PIMP’s Choice is now well underway and the votes are coming in like a Guinness record attempt for the tallest McDonald’s soft serve cone. Spiralling and out of control!

For those of you who don’t know – the PIMP’s Choice award is in its first year this year.

Formed to uncover the one question that has plagued popular culture for as long as we’ve known that cream could freeze....

What is the most PIMPING flavour ever?

Suggestions have come in ranging from “Vanilladizzle” to “some kind of awesome chocolate combination with shards of golden bling scattered throughout”.

If you haven’t already – the time to vote is now – entries will be finalised at the end of the week and the 3 finalists will be custom mixed at Cold Rock near you.

The winning formula will be kept on file at ICM headquarters and the creator will receive a framed certification of their contribution to the field of ICE-CREAMATICS.

In other news –

I tried a Dixie Cup this week... It was shit – who thought this was a good idea?

Snack sized vanilla that you eat with a wooden stick?

It’s like a little blackhole for creativity and life – just made my life a little too “vanilla”

Unless the niche market of “nuns and infants with no teeth” is particularly profitable – which it obviously must be otherwise this little bastard wouldn’t still be around.

I don’t know what made me go the way of the Dixie Cup... maybe I felt sorry for it... maybe I was just particularly uninspired that day... either way. I don’t suggest you do.

This. Will not, be the PIMPs choice.

Until next week – keep the entries coming, and look out for the ICM logo – hitting the streets soon.

ICE CREAM MONDAY - EPISODE #7

'Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

Summer Lazing-day

On what could only be described as ‘a freakin sweet Sunday afternoon’ I decided to get a head-start on this weeks entry. The people need their Ice Cream news, and who would I be to deprive them of that!

Guest of this week, Miss Elise Worthington.

This week brings us to West End - home to largest and mostly violently passed out collection of odd-balls this side of the river. Also host to a fairly ubiquitous sense of acceptance – you could seriously take your pants off in the middle of the street and no-one would really blink… if those streets could talk.

After a somewhat brief period researching a spot to venture into the field of ‘on location ICM’ I discovered “CIBO”….

Nestled in the folds of an unassuming shop front and alleyway, CIBO has some of best vibes I’ve experienced in the café setting for a long time.
Friendly staff, inviting atmosphere, relatively fair $10 minimum for EFTPOS, it’s a nice little spot.

A highlight of the day was definitely the latino covers CD they had on… featuring such mamba greats as “I will survive”, “Lady Marmalade” and “The Sex and the City theme song “– in half time! – THAT SHIT HAD A GROOVE!.

So – to business – the ice cream.

There were a few contenders at the taste-test stage, one of which I intend to go back for was “ACE” a gelati featuring orange, carrot and lemon, and tasting something like a Sunkist on steroids. It had something going on, but not today.

In the end we went for a mix of the Double Chocolate Hazelnut with a side of Pistachio. (I don’t know about you, but when ever someone says Pistachio to me I can only think about a part in Aladdin, where there’s some crazy market guy selling beans and Pistachios… I strongly suggest you go watch Alladin after you read this… you’ll see what I’m talking about… actually you might not… it probably accounts for 3secs of the whole movie.)

…. So back on topic! – when I mentioned the friendly staff before what I should have also mentioned was their strong moral values for the health of their customers too… after attempting to order a large cup to share we were promptly interrupted with a “Are you serious? That shit is huge”.

On paper it comes across pretty rude, but the delivery was honestly golden, service with a smile.

And she was right, the medium was huge enough!

And here’s the official word…

The chocolate Gianduja was rich and smooth and fittingly complimented with giant shards of hazelnut chocolate. Usually I detest substandard compounded chocolate adulterating my ice cream experience, but the quality was commendable and did not detract from the flavor at all. The chocolate wasn’t overtly sweet which I solely attribute to us being able to destroy the entire excessively generous serve ($5.90 for a medium size that was MORE than enough for two). The pistachio was also excellent and did not taste like that disgusting fluro green faux-stacio that I so often associate with the nutty category . However I was disappointed by the lack of actual pistacio nuts in the formula. Although it would be unfair to blame Cibo for this, the ice cream did seem to melt faster than we could eat it, and I would like to point out that cumulatively Ben and I destroy food at a rate that would appear alarming to most ordinary humans.

Freeformers Top 5! By John St John

Yo!!! John St John's kept it fun this week with his top 5. Great set of tracks together, check him out at Taboo tonight if your in the valley!

Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars (Shazam Dub Remix)

I love the original Shooting Stars by Bag Raiders for two reasons. Firstly cause of that super sweet "Wahh, Wah, Wah. Wa Wa Wahhh Wa Wa" sound. You know what I'm talking about. And secondly because it those really cool unassuming vocals in the first half. Sounds a bit like Girl & The Sea by the Presets. But I think the second half's vocals are bit Bon Jovi "Livin' on a Prayer" for Indie Disco. Not that Livin' on a Prayer isn't a bad ass song; Check out how the Avalanches drop it at Splendour '06. They get the crowd to sing and then mash it up. What a mind fuck!

Errr... but yeah this is a cool remix cause it just takes that wahh wahh wahh bit and discoes it up a bit. There is a vocal version floating around the internets as well.

Actually its on my mix for Horror Disco!
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5okgfhz1znk

Inflagranti - Brash & Vulgar

Wait til it gets half way. You'll know what I'm talking about. The people went mad... when they heard that!

Deekline & Wizard - Back Up (Krafty Kuts Remix)

Krafty Kuts is just a wizard innit. This song even has a pseudo dub step interlude in the middle. Yeahhhh breakksss yeahh.

Alex Metric - Head Straight

Nice vocal indie disco track. Great tingly synths on the chorus.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix)

I think there was a lot of cream in jeans when A-Trak dropped this one at Parklife.
