ICE CREAM MONDAY w/ THE FRETS!

Ice Cream Monday

'Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

This week we caught up with Brisbane's very own soon to be internationally acclaimed Ice Cream reviewers.

We caught up at the infamous valley sugar-shack. ShliX to sample some of their wares.
And after a fairly intensive perusal of the options, the boys finally decided on their flavours.

Matt - Cookies + Cream
Peter - Chubby Watermelon
Maui - Ferrero Rocher

Mitchell - Red Bull

However the Ice Cream suddenly took second place as Peter caught up with his long time sweetheart and movie-star friend Isabel Lucas (yeah - the crazy robot chick from Transformers!!)

So after about 20minutes of listening to Peter trying to offer Isabel the remains of his melted ice cream (awesome by the way) we got back to business....

Unfortunately everyone had somehow managed to get flavours that

"tasted exactly like the things they were named after"

Matt's ice cream (bottom centre) was described as tasting like actual pieces of cookies were in there....
Peter's Chubby Watermelon (left)... Just like biting into that sweet darker bit of a fresh watermelon....

I had a Walnut on a date (top right) - one of my favourites by far - if you haven't yet tried it... Put it on your list of things to do before you die... right below Isabel Lucas :P

Maui's Ferrero (top left) yeap you guessed it.... just Like a Ferrero Rocher - although he did put alot of brain power into coming to that conclusion (bless his cotton socks)

However we finally hit upon a literary gold mine with Mitchell's Red Bull (bottom right)

Tasting like - a carbonated apple juice on stereoids... bam!

In an effort to get a little more from the review process than complementing ShliX for making flavours that immaculately represent the things they're named after... We made a group decision to get one more....

A bit Chai

Tasting something like a creamy doughnut....
.... but more like the type you get from woolies...
...... and with faux Chai powder (according to Maui)

The gauntlet was definitely thrown down - and we'll be sure to follow up on the ingredients with ShliX in the coming weeks.

Resting back into the lull after a fairly intense sugar rush - the boys wandered back to get ready for a gig. They're off overseas to showcase their new material for labels in LA, New York and London and will be back on Australian shores sometime in March.

We're gonna try and get an international guest review in the mean time....

Until then !!!

Peace, Love and Double-scoops!

Kick off 2010 with some prog!!!

Prog House is such attractive music, i truly believe it is one of the most attractive genre's there is. Will be sharing some music from Arno Cost, 16 Bit Lolitas, Nic Fianculli and more, hope you enjoy it!!! Love Free Form Crew..

1. Cicada - One Beat Away (Arno Cost Remix)

Arno Cost's Myspace biography;
Arno Cost is one of France's most talented up-and-coming music producers and djs. His music is making huge waves across the world and at such as young age, Arno is set to join the DJ elite in the coming years.

Music has always fascinated Arno. At a very early age his parents immersed him in pop music and disco; and he first began producing back in 1999 in his bedroom. His influences & inspiration include all manner of music from Disco, Italo-Disco, "The French Touch" (Daft Punk, Benjamin Diamond, Alan Braxe, Philip Zdar etc.) to modern day heroes such as Stuart Price, Axwell, Lifelike and Eric Prydz.

In 2006, Arno remixed the Geyster's tune ‘Under the Fuse of Love’ which soared to second place in the UK club charts where it saw success for several weeks. Later that year, Arno produced some remixes for The Freshmakers, one for Serial Crew (Boss), another for Da Sushiman (Ledge Music), and covered the well-known Michael Jackson classic "Thriller" ("Rilod" - Nice Music).

However, Arno truly defined his style with the hit track "Magenta," composed alongside Arias. Their song garnered support from some of the top dj talent in the world including Pete Tong, Tom Novy, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. First released during December 2006 in Germany, it became one of the most-played tunes at "The Amsterdam Dance Event." Coupled with a storming mix by Dave Spoon the track reached dizzying heights and was definitely THE track of 2007. This brought him to the attention of management team Club Class Music Management, who he joined in early Jan 2008.

Continuing with his Serial Records releases, Apocolypse came next, a stunning monster of a record, that had airplay and DJ play from a list of DJs so long we could be writing for their names for a week !!! Signed to labels globally this set the scene for 2008 !!! Souvenir soon followed again to critical acclaim, then the stunning Darling Habour all showcased on home city label Serial Records, and of course licensed to the cream of labels everywhere....

In between these stunning originals, Arno collaborated with friend John Dahlback on Golden Walls which was signed to Nero Recordings in Sweden and again was a massive success in clubs (there seems to be a recurring theme here don’t you think ????) Remix offers flooded in, Arno picking his way through these to only agree to do tracks he felt he could bring a different dimension to, Zoo Brazil – Kalle (with Norman Doary) / MOS Australia’s Dirty Laundry – Hate Me / Baba O Riley MOS Data (with Norman Doray) / Michael Feiner feat Daniel Lindstrome got the magic touch from this in demand Parisian talent. We should also mention the cheeky edits Arno does for his DJ sets, stunning re works of well known records, that have to be heard to be believed.

Rounding off a fantastic year, Arno was asked to mix the prestigious Club FG Compilation 2009 (sold over Christmas 08) one of the biggest selling compilations of the year in France, previous luminaries to mix this are David Guetta in 2008 and Antoine Clamaran in 2007, good company indeed !!

Move forward to early 2009 and what does the year have to offer we wonder ? Quite a lot as it happens, his latest Arno Cost record Cyan has been delivered, a new label ACtive Music is on the horizon with a new alter ego name (watch this space) and a season in Ibiza this summer is looming large as he pushes ever further up the DJ ranks, 2009 looks like being the turning point in the rise of a global phenomenon!

- Great release, Arno Cost always bringing out some awesome tunes. You may remember his last one Cyan

2. Filo & Peri feat. Eric Lumiere - Soul & The Sun (Jerome Isma-Ae Remix)

3. 16 Bit Lolitas-Cold Energy (Original mix)

4. Yousef - Come Home (Original Mix)

5. Nic Fanciulli - Work The Week (Original Mix)

6. Martijn Ten Velden - Together (Original Mix)

Martijn Ten Velden's Myspace Biography;
Martijn ten Velden has established himself as a leading DJ/producer on an international level, playing his signature twisted, electro, minimal sets to crowds all over the world. He’s rocked legendary dance floors including Renaissance in London, Redlight in Paris, Peppermint in Dubai, as well as Godskitchen and Ministry of Sound.

And if you can’t find Martijn rocking the roofs off a nightclub, then you’ll find him in the studio, producing and remixing a string of today’s dance hits. Responsible for chart-toppers including “I Wish You Would” which became a huge anthem in Ibiza during Summer 2006 and 2007, as well as Martijn’s recently released remix on Defected Records, the Shapeshifters remake of Orbital’s classic anthem “Chime”.

Successful partnerships with Mark Knight for Toolroom Records, and most recently Splittr, a collaboration with Mark Yardley from the Stanton Warriors, prove how innovative and evolving Martijn’s work can be. This has earned him the respect and support from jocks like Roger Sanchez, Deep Dish and Steve Lawler. So it comes as no surprise that Martijn was nominated for 'Best Artist' and 'Outstanding Remix' at 2006’s House Music Awards. Winter Music Conference 2008 also saw Martijn’s compilation ‘Toolroom Knights Vol 1’ on Toolroom Records up for nomination at the 2008 IDMA Awards, for ‘Best Compilation’ which was up against MOS The Annual and Ultra Dance 08 on Ultra Records.

Keen to keep his name in the headlines, Martijn now spends most of his time working on solo productions and remixes, as well as touring worldwide.
Look out for Martijn ten Velden at a venue near you!

- Great tune from Martijn, great artist!

7. Flow and Zeo - Believe (Beckers remix)

ICE CREAM MONDAY! - RNAs Best Ice Cream 2009

Ice Cream Monday
^^ now with a ph-resh new look! ^^

'Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

For this weeks installment we ventured a little beyond the realm of the homeland, to go in search of Ice Cream from over the horizon....

After an awesome walk around the Kondalilla Falls park with the crew from HSM we decided to dabble in a touch of shameless cross-promotion.
Chris had the hot tip and steered in the direction of a big time RNA winning store tucked into an unassuming shop front... MILANO!

After scoping out the award winning selections - Chris went for, among other candidates... the Mango... a fine summer day choice if I do say so myself...

I went for a fruit sample - with a cup full of Lemon, Blueberry and Rockmelon sorbets - Rockmelon was surprisingly good... its a very subtle thing to capture... and I tipped my cap to the Milano people in a knowing confectionarists (?spelling?) way as a saunted back to my car....

BUT TO THE NEWS! >>>
Mango Gellati - A love story (by Chris Raine)

When you take on the fruit that is already so good it should really be classed a confectionary, you had better do a good job of making it one. So it was on this Sunday that I tested out Caloundra's Milano Gellati store's efforts.

It was good. Very good.

As I relentlessly scrapped the bottom of the small paper cup like if I did it enough more would come out,

it reminded me of a movie I saw once called 'Perfume' (also originally a novel). The movie is set in 18th century and it tells the story of the Jean-Baptiste Grenouille who has an incomparable gift of creating perfumes. Anyway, he ends up murdering a heap of women to capture 'the essence' of woman, a single drop of which then induces the town into a giant orgy. Good film.

Eating this exceptional mango gellati makes me wonder just what they did to the mango trees to capture what is nothing less than it's true essence because this ice-cream is the best damn ice-cream I have ever eaten. Bring on the orgy.

Ice Cream Monday - Calippo-ville

Ice Cream Monday

‘Making the gold coast a little more delicious, one week at a time’

On the back what is always a memorable day at Summerfeildayze we ventured right into the heart of Queensland's 'holiday town', Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.
The only place fitting to sample such a cornerstone of the Australian summer experience

THE CALIPPO

As I write this, I'm sitting at an internet cafe in a shopping centre at teh mall down the street from my hotel.

With 3mins to spare I will just say this....

The Calippo...
Definitely at home in hot weather, tasty and refreshing whether you are inclined towards the original lemon or the raspberry pineapple.

A short but sweet summer experience. And one not soon forgotten. Don't let summer pass you by without one.

I think that's everything I wanted to say...
If I had time to rant - I would, but the counter says I have 0:52 left....

Ciao for now!!!

ICE CREAM MONDAY - TWO-THOUSAND AND BEN!

Ice Cream Monday

‘Making the new year a little more delicious, one week at a time’

With promises of grandeur and resolutions up the walls, the New Year was definitely here and true to my word I decided it was time to take Ice Cream Monday BIG TIME!!

So out in search of the biggest thing to happen in Ice Cream I went…..

Ironically this I what I found….

Roaming around the Cloudland New Years eve celebrations were these awesome little ice creams from the Lick! Ice Cream powerhouse.

Although I only managed to try one, I was told (to my horror) that there were THREE different flavours going around.

Speculation has it that there were:
Honeycomb
Cherry

And some other mystery flavour…

I tried the Honeycomb and I’ve gotta admit, it’s a hard little thing to review, being so small – but the delicate balance of well crafted vanilla wrapped in the genius of a tiny little waffle cone that could rival Japans prowess for electronics engineering – I was pleasantly satisfied by the bite sized lil devil.

I had hoped to speak to the Brains behind Lick today, Mr Grant Lew, however unfortunately their office is still closed for the holidays until next week….

So until next week Lick…. Until next week!!!

In other Ice Cream news -

President Obama is making waves in Hawaii with his newly christened “Snow-Bama”, a lemon-lime, cherry and passion-guava syrup snow cone from Island Snow Shave Ice.

I’ve been dabbling in the snow cone scene I must admit… ever since I came into new ownership of my very own snow cone making machine, albeit a little rudimentary…..

(I love you Mr. Snowman)

Next week the plan is to hunt down the Lick Ice Cream people – also to see what Ice cream wins the SFD public opinion for BEST COME DOWN HELPER… this should be fun!!

Come find me at SFD on the Gold Coast for free Ice Cream Vouchers and much MUCH MORE! (not really much more, probably just high fives)
