ICE CREAM MONDAY - An Australian Story

Today (well, Monday) I decided to go back to the shelves of the supermarkets, and take a long hard look at what was on offer.

When talking widely available, 'premium' offering mass produced ice cream, there are a few names that instantly come to mind.

Connoisseur, Viennetta... Homer Hudson



I must admit... The Hudson lands were virgin territory for me.

So, for the ginger first steps - I decided to go with something that maintained a little bit of national pride.

"THE DIGGER"

Unlike many in it's class, the Homer Hudson variety comes with a backstory.
For one - it's Australian Ice Cream (out of Eagle Farm no less - bonus), for two - The Digger was designed by Australian Idol (in the original definition, not the shitty show) Peter Evans, the name behind Australian fooderies such as Hugo's in Bondi and The Pantry in Melbourne.

The Digger is a deliciously simple piece of deliciousness that somehow found a balance between
Anzac biscuit chunks (of which I'm told account for 20% of the tubs contents) and honeycomb ice cream.

Like many of the deep freeze offerings that you pluck from a supermarket, I would suggest leaving it sit on the counter for about 5mins before you tuck in, to allow the evil icey fingers of that cold bastard Black Frost to wither away and die, but once it's warmed up to 'better start eating it before it melts' temperature, the consistency and famous elasticity of a good ice cream really come through.

Good for a movie night and eating directly from the tub.

ICE CREAM MONDAY - with my little bro

This week I've handed over the reigns to my little bro - Tom Hamley.

On ya bike son...

It was any other typical Ice-Cream Monday...

After a drunken night at Fluffies Jane Schon and I strolled down queen street the next day still with a slight glaze on their eyes.

In a desperate bid to recover we spotted Gelatissimo on Albert street....

I opted for a three scoop sorbet combination including mango, lemon and passionfruit.. While Jane chose a two scoop chocolate sensation of cookies and cream and macadamia and caramel chocolate...

After a few mouthfuls of deliciousness I was overcome by the feeling that told me this was a good decision, however as we scooped ever closer to the bottom the cups the effects of ice-cream mixing last nights alcohol suddenly didn't seem like a good mix and the nausea set in.

Having said this, the deliciousness was still appreciated...

Tom = 9/10 for the passion-fruit and mango while the lemon element gets a 6 for it's overpower..ful..ness...

But...

My uncertainty in the scoring however... may be due to my choice of mixtures....

With cookies and cream being my favourite all time flavour it definitely rated in my
top three and you can never go wrong with caramel or nuts.. Overall

8.75/10...

You must excuse my rather lassiez-fair approach to the blog over the last couple of weeks.

I make no apologies for this... and hope that you may indeed be taking the the depths of the barren chest freezer that is life to find your own sugary source of inspiration in my occasional lapses of routine.

Indeed it is not called Ice Cream Wednesday, nor Tuesday... and so despite all attempts to refine the goings on of the Ice Cream world into a 24hour window, I sometimes... fall asleep on the couch.

This week I decided to dabble in a decent dollop of decadence dat I dared don't done d(b)efore

Gold Class movies
-Delicious.

You really do get what you pay for here (from the movie end anyway)

Nice big seats - that comfortably snuggle two.... although I'm sure that practise is frowned upon...

And enough space that you don't have to listen the fatso next door choking on chewing his popcorn...

Unfortunately though.... MASSSSSSIVE let down in the Sundae department...


As you can see... (or perhaps you cannot... Anyone want to fill the position of official ICM photographer??... iPhone is being pushed to limits these days)

...for starters... nowhere near enough thought put into the presentation....

A sundae should be something that shines with radiant beauty.... not a blackhole for the soul

This was described as

A decadent chocolate fudge brownie sundae with lindt chocolate

ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE AWESOME.
Together - you'd think this would be mind blowing....

And for a casual $23.00.... you'd want it to be...

I think what they forgot was the majority of an item such as this is held together with THE ICE CREAM... which tasted suspiciously of over frozen high school camp quality 'palsonic' style vanilla... It literally reminded me of frozen milk.

So F minus for your shitty sundae Gold Class... sort your shit out.... that's 1/4 of a tank of petrol that you just tried to pass as Ice Cream... not cool man...

I will be back... and it better have been fixed....

ICE CREAM MONDAY - W/ Trav White


'making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

True to our mission - Ice Cream Monday is all about sharing the love...
This week we headed down to the Woolsheds to get the guest word on some delicious treats with
Trav, Jensen, Gee, Cass and Wal.

And now over to Trav for the review....


It was a Friday night in the valley where I bumped into an old friend Ben “Hammertime” Hamely. After a few beers it came to my attention that I haven’t been involved with Ice cream Mondays… this began to trouble me… soon the deal was done, Dinner and ice cream on Monday…

5pm – Monday at work came along, a quick call to Jensen & “The Hammer”, we organised for an 8pm ice cream meet up ( I didn’t want to say date – because that would sound gay… but what the hell – we’re two grown men induldging in some frozen treats on a Monday night… the world is our oyster)

The Hammer arrived on time, and we made a swift trip to coles new farm to gather the goodies…

What was on the menu?

Hammers choice – Weis mango sorbet

Trav’s Choice – Connoisseur cookies and cream

Word soon spread of the ice cream date and within 10minutes my roomies Jensen, Gee and late arrival Wal were on the case.

After Gee’s proclamation that he was the world expert on Cookies and cream – we stuck in.

Textures were just delicious – and I like that you can pull the cookies apart in your mouth.

Our other friend Cass – was feeling particularly insightful and described the cookie and cream experience as…. “its just yeah – the ice cream itself isn’t white – but a strange grey – and its interesting that the cookies themselves don’t freeze and stay separate to the ice cream.”

Wal’s word on the Mango….

9/10 due that weis bar original is better but its pretty good for a mango sorbet.

Gee – “ fuckin’ awesome”

All in all we decided that we really should do this more often, and perhaps put a bit more effort into out writing skills…

ICE CREAM MONDAY - Pulling Cones - 50 cent style

This week we took a stroll down to a local Logan haunt after a spot of cable-skiing (epicly failed on my part I must say... I'm unco at the best of times... and today.... was no exception - however my comrades performed to a standard I can only equate to the quality of the first bite into a Mango sorbet in the middle of hot summers day - pretty good).

I digress.... we were here to sample what is undoubtedly one of the most famous icons in popular Ice Creamology ...... The 50cent cone.... you can't get a dolla outta me!

In keeping with the affordability of the product, this week I recruited 4 guest reviewers to pass judgement on the sweet treat... however as a result... could only afford $0.50 worth of professional commentary... Straight up - just like the cone.

The results were thus...

BRENDAN HORSFALL - The creaminess of the reconstituted pig fat is second to none. Smooth consistency, just like grandma used to make. The cone housing does taste like a cardboard box but is to be expected for the price. Overall, good value and good taste. 4 cherries out of 5.

CHRISTOPHER RUDDOCK - I took my first bite and suddenly there I was at 10 years of age, looking into the eyes of a chubby yet blissfully happy child. We sat together enjoying the one thing we had in common - 50c soft serves - all the while thinking 'man if only I had a $1, then i would have two!

MARK LOBO - It was so good, I forgot to taste it.

CHRIS RAINE - The Mcdonalds soft-serve machine - a never-ending soft white drill, burrowing a little hole into Australia's obesity since 1971.
