ICE CREAM MONDAY - EPISODE #1

'Making life a little more delicious, one week at a time'

Exhibit A: The Monaco Bar

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!
(seriously, was there any other way to start this?!)

It’s with an air of almost unbridled excitement that I introduce to you the very first, EVER – Ice Cream Monday post – big love to the Free-Form boys for supporting the cause and bringing you some pre-summer love!

There’s a lot in store over the coming months, as the big man has got summer pre-heating away, I’m going to stay equally busy finding ways to keep things Esky.

We’ll be sharing some stories, some laughs, impromptu ice cream parties in local parks near you, and no doubt some of the heartbreak we’ve all known too well as we watch the double scoop roll off the top and onto the pavement of despair.

Each week I’ll be featuring another delicious frozen treat as suggested by you and taking some notes of my experiences along the way. I encourage you to write in with your childhood favourites, summer heat beaters, date haunts, and stories of your own – Ice Cream Monday isn’t just another blog – it’s a way of life.

After some icy discussion surrounding the inspiration of this series I thought we should take a bit of back track and look at some famous moments in ice cream history.

Ever felt like a delicious cookie but it’s just too hot?

Ever felt like a nice vanilla ice cream, but it’s just too “vanilla”?

Where to go next?.... HOW BOUT A MONACO BAR!?!

Still revered in Australian culture as ‘the shit’ both by its sheer brilliance in confectionary achievement and in bearing an unfortunate resemblance to the former. The Monaco Bar met an unexpected end not long ago, to this day the reason is still unknown (although I’ll admit, I didn’t do much research into why).
All that matters is it was swiftly returned to the freezer of your local dodgy fish & chip shop, corner store and servo after a petition to Nestle Peters came in with over 4000 signatures – that, friends, is politics in action!

So after my brief expedition into ice cream history I decided to purchase this Monaco Bar, Ice Cream Monday = officially underway!

Monaco Bar is a classic for a reason – its pretty awesome… It’s a hard formula to get wrong and I’m sure the beauty and popularity of this classic is in its simplicity, in a very similar way to a cheeseburger or a swing set at the park. You know what you’re going to get, and it delivers. Cookie, meet ice cream = classic

It also provides for some creativity – eating it Oreo style! (Dunking in coffee is not recommended)

And who could have forgotten… the ice cream casserole

Unfortunately I never had the chance to sample the original Monaco bar and for this I am deeply sorry, but from all accounts, since its return, things have never been quite the same.

It’s a little bigger, and from what I’ve been told I’m pretty sure they stretched the flavour out across a bigger biscuit.

For the record – it’s a classic that will never loose its place in popular culture, however, just like the tricycle you once kicked neighbourhood ass on in your primary years, coming back to the memory has been a little bit of a let down in comparison to the hype.

In my opinion, best enjoyed in moderately warm conditions with a friend in a park or by a pool with a light breeze across the water. The downfall is that it has considerable difficulty ‘keeping its shit together’ in the heat.

I give it a solid high five just like I would an old friend.

Now the lines are open to you!

Every week I’ll be updating the ICM survey site with the latest addition to the freezer of love and asking you to cast your votes – what will be the hottest Ice Cream of Summer 09? Only time will tell.
